Humpback Whale Adoption - How It’s Done

Adopting a whale is possible through many organizations that have conservation programs through out the world. There are two US centers that are very active in the process of humpback whale adoption and are easily accessible via the Internet. Both organizations are non-profit and your donation money goes to pay for conservation and research efforts critical to the survival of the centers.

The first program is through Whale Center of New England at www.whalecenter.org. They have been in existence for more than twenty years and have been a leader in whale research, conservation, and education. The center reaches out to the public in several ways. They have school programs for all grade levels and internship opportunities. They also have community programs like whale watches and they provide a humpback whale adoption package as their primary adoption program.

For $45 a humpback whale adoption can take place. You will receive: 1) a color photo (8″ x 10″) of your whale; 2) your humpback whale adoption biography; 3) a whale adoption certificate; 4) a CD of humpback whale calls; 5) a humpback whale adoption button; 6) The Whale Watchers Companion Guide and 7) their newsletter FLUKEPRINTS. You can go online now at www.whalecenter.org and check out the humpback whale adoption procedures and view the whales up for adoption and their recent sightings.

The second program is through WDCS (Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society) at www.whales.org. They are a global non-profit located in the US dedicated to protecting and conserving whales, dolphins and their habitats. Their research is reliable and they have a motivated support base. They have a humpback whale adoption service that costs $30 for the standard kit and $55 for the deluxe kit. The standard kit provides: 1) an adoption certificate; 2) a whale poster that’s a whale migration map; 3) a WDCS window decal and 4) a newsletter.  The deluxe kit provides everything in the standard kit plus: 1) a DVD about whales and 2) a special Whalewatch Newsletter.

Hopefully this article has given you some useful advice to begin the process of adopting a whale. Your adoption makes a valuable contribution to allow organizations to continue research and conservation of whales. It helps biologists purchase the materials needed to continue their research and conservation efforts.
