Reasons Not To Adopt A Pet
There are many reasons to adopt a loving pet for yourself or your family and conversely, there are just as many reasons not to adopt a pet. To adopt a pet you must be willing to accept the responsibilities that go along with pet ownership. I have made a list of what I consider to be the most important five reasons not to adopt a pet.
The first of five reasons not to adopt a pet has to do with the time you are able to spend with your pet? If you are a very busy person that is constantly on the go and out of town frequently does having a pet fit into your lifestyle? Certain pets require different levels of attention than others. For example dogs and cats need more attention than a fish or bird. Ultimately though you must be honest with yourself to determine if you really have the time to take care of a pet.
The second of five reasons not to adopt a pet has to do with the money you are able to spend on your pets needs? Many people grossly underestimate the cost of feeding, vet care, grooming, and personal housing needs for a pet. It can be costly to have a cat or dog and if you are barely making ends meet now how can you expect to feed and care for another member of your family unit. Carefully consider your finances before investing in a pet.
The third of five reasons not to adopt a pet involves the actual physical place where you live. If you are an apartment dweller you may not be able to have a pet. I personally live in an apartment where one of the tenants bought a large dog and the landlord refused to allow the tenants to keep the dog. They moved to a house where there was room for the animal to be free to move around in the yard. It is critical to get your landlord’s express acceptance before getting your pet.
The fourth of five reasons not to adopt a pet is if you will be moving to a new location soon and are unsure of the status of your location stability. Pets need a secure living environment, as do humans. It has been shown that moving is one of the most stressful activities for people to deal with. Your pets are also very vulnerable to the stress of moving and can get sick or have problems adjusting to a new environment.
The last of five reasons not to adopt a pet is what I call the status factor. Many people think it is cool to adopt a certain type of pet and in doing so will make them more attractive to others. It is very common for people to adopt pit bulls and other breeds that can be trained to be dangerous or menacing thinking that they personally will be considered tough. No thought is given to the animal’s needs for love, caring, and social well-being. This is a recipe for disaster and certainly one of the reasons not to adopt a pet.
